WhatsApp Rolls Out New Features for Chats, Calls, and Channels

WhatsApp has introduced a series of updates across Chats, Calls, and Channels to enhance the user experience, aiming to make communication and content sharing more seamless and intuitive.

Chat Updates

One of the key features added to group chats is the real-time online indicator, allowing users to see how many members are currently active. This indicator is displayed directly below the group name, helping users gauge participation at a glance.

To reduce notification overload, WhatsApp has introduced a new highlight notification setting for group chats. Users can now choose “Highlights” under the “Notify for” settings to receive notifications only for mentions, replies, and messages from saved contacts. Alternatively, selecting “All” will continue delivering all group message alerts.

Beyond group conversations, WhatsApp now allows users to create events within one-on-one chats. This feature adds flexibility for planning between individuals, especially for casual meetups or reminders.

New improvements to event creation include the ability to RSVP as “maybe,” invite one additional guest, set an end date and time for longer events, and pin events in the chat for easy access.

In addition, WhatsApp has refined how users interact with reactions. Now, users can quickly view others’ reactions and simply tap the emoji they want to use to respond.

For iPhone users, a new document scanning feature has been added. By selecting “Scan Document” from the attachment options, users can now scan, crop, and save documents directly through the app—streamlining the process without needing third-party apps.

Another iOS-specific update allows users to set WhatsApp as the default app for messaging and calls. To enable this, go to Settings > Default Apps and select WhatsApp as your preferred option.

Calling Updates

On the calling front, WhatsApp has simplified the process of adding participants to one-on-one calls. Users can now tap the phone icon at the top of the chat screen and select “Add to call” to include more people.

Video calls have also been upgraded with better technology for stability and clarity. A newly optimized connection system automatically selects the best available path to prevent disruptions like freezing or dropped video.

Additionally, a more advanced bandwidth detection system now enables quicker upgrades to HD video quality, providing a clearer and more responsive video experience.

iPhone users will benefit from a pinch-to-zoom feature during video calls, allowing them to get a closer look at themselves or others on screen.

Channel Updates

Channel administrators are also seeing new capabilities. Like in group chats, they can now record and share short videos—up to 60 seconds long—directly with their followers. This brings a more personal and engaging touch to broadcast-style communication.

For users who are unable to listen to voice messages immediately, WhatsApp now provides written summaries of voice message content in Channels, making it easier to stay updated even when audio playback isn’t convenient.

These updates reflect WhatsApp’s ongoing commitment to refining user experience and offering more flexible, real-time communication tools across its platform.
